About the Group

Hailed as an ensemble that "zaps the myth that classical stuff's stuffy" (Birmingham News), QUADRE-The Voice of Four Horns is a group of four solo French horn artists who provide concert presentations, interactive educational outreach, lectures, and workshops each season. The ensemble’s mission is to make new music accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for audiences. Not surprisingly, QUADRE’s latest recording, Citrus, is described as having moments of “inspiration, sorrow, silliness, love, virtuosic display, but above all: just plain fun” (International Horn Call).

Since 1998, the California-based horn quartet has offered over 700 performances across the country, from the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival in California to the Mobile Symphony in Alabama; from the Manhattan School of Music in New York to the Greater Grand Forks Symphony in North Dakota. Its repertoire features classical works, the artists’ own original brass music and arrangements connected with the group’s tireless wit, banter, and humor.

As active collaborators, QUADRE has worked with orchestras, jazz bands, college wind ensembles, school academic programs—such as math and civics classes—as well as with other professional performers and composers. As teaching artists, the ensemble has connected with over 50,000 students, seniors and adults in interactive concert performances. The group has received funding for this work from a variety of organizations, notably: Chamber Music America, the San Francisco Symphony, the Peninsula Community Foundation, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley.

In addition to its regular home concert season and its national tours, the ensemble is currently in residence with three schools in the City of Mountain View in a program called Toot Your Own Horn. In this educational initiative, the members of the group teach students ensemble skills, music fundamentals, and repertoire, leading up to collaborative performances with QUADRE.

QUADRE provides horn quartet performances for diverse audiences nationally. Through school outreach and public concert presentations, the organization expands the definition of conventional chamber music to include education and interaction with audiences of all ages.
