On the horn:
Local French horn quartet debuts new CD
By Molly Tannenbaum
Mountain View Voice
(February 2006) The French horn is like
the Merlot grape. Vintners know to throw in some Merlot to
rescue a harsh Cabernet, and composers use the mellow, velvety
tones of the French horn to create a blended orchestra sound.
But the Merlot grape also makes fine wine in its own right.
Enter the French horn quartet.
Quadre: The Voice of Four Horns, brings this rare delight
to Mountain View. It is the only regularly playing French
horn quartet in the country, and the group has just finished
its second album, "Citrus."

Recording Review: Citrus
By Bob Ashworth
Hornplayer
(December 2006) ... From the outset the
homogeneity of the group is in evidence. Their attention to
details of balance, ensemble and intonation is exemplary throughout
and there is some particularly fine work in the middle and
low registers that results in a firm and dense texture.

Recording Review: Citrus
By John Dressler
International Horn Call
(May 2006) What could possibly be new for
horn quartet? We've got the American Horn Quartet and the
Transatlantic Horn Quartet. Doesn't that just about sum it
up? Not on your life! Here are four amazingly talented young
hornists with some very hip music for audiences of all ages,
not just the musically-trained hornist! These are peppy, jazz-based
pieces with some sort of dance element in nearly all of them.
As the variety of titles suggests, one will encounter Latin/Spanish
rhythms, American idioms, and other contrasts of setting.
There are movements of slow tempi with some beautiful cantabile
melodies as well. The quartet's blend, intonation, and musical
interpretation are excellent. In many spots, they almost sound
like one person doing a multi-track recording. There are moments
of inspiration, sorrow, silliness, love, virtuosic display,
but above all: just plain fun.

By Nancy Raabe

not-so-quiet revolution has been taking place around the state.
The leading agents of this movement go by
the code name of "QUADRE, The Voice of Four Horns." Their
mission: to explode the elitism of the classical concert-going
experience.

Quadre Captures Hearts During Stay
By Nancy Raabe
Birmingham News Staff Writer
(May 2000) They came from California. They
played Alabama. And they conquered 14,000 hearts and
minds, as part of their effort to make music an indispensable
part of all of our lives. Formally, this quartet of
youthful West Coasters is hailed around Alabama as
"QUADRE, The Voice of Four Horns." Colloquially, it's
been hailed on the streets of Selma as "The Quadras"
- as in, "Hey there, you Quadras!" when two or more
happen to be out and about.

(February 2000) SELMA, Al. What do
you call four horns from California when you stick them in
middle of Alabama? Why QUADRE of course! What do we do, you
ask? Well, we are a horn quartet that teaches and performs
for schools and communities just like yours. We interact with
elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, universities
and professional artistic groups.
